Spain

In Spain, giving birth is much different than in Hawaii. Hawaii, takes a very natural approach to birth and do no suggest women to get epidural, because it hinders the bodies' natural pain relieving process. Also, they strongly recommend that when a baby is born, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the first contact the baby has is with his/her mother. They do not take the baby away from the mother.

This is very different from Spain. In Spain, they take the baby away from the mother. Even more, it is very common for  C-sections. If the baby is not born within 3-4 hours from labor, they will cut the mother up right away. I have visited one friend who had given birth to a beautiful baby boy named Biel and the hospital room was very steril and the mother was only allowed to see the baby to feed him. I personally do not think I can handle some strangers taking away my baby. I have mentioned this to my boyfriend who is from here and he thought that was absurd I thought like this. He couldn't understand how I didn't understand that capable nurses and doctors were taking care of the baby and I should not think like this.

In Japan, where I was born, fathers were not even allowed in the labor rooms.

  1. Andrea, I think it is so interesting how different cultures handle a natural process so differently. I too read about Japan and the fathers not being in the delivery room, similar to the US many many years ago. I have two children and right after birth I was allowed to see them but they took them away but I got them back within a few hours and they were allowed to stay in the room with me.
