In Spain, giving birth is much different than in Hawaii. Hawaii, takes a very natural approach to birth and do no suggest women to get epidural, because it hinders the bodies' natural pain relieving process. Also, they strongly recommend that when a baby is born, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the first contact the baby has is with his/her mother. They do not take the baby away from the mother.
This is very different from Spain. In Spain, they take the baby away from the mother. Even more, it is very common for C-sections. If the baby is not born within 3-4 hours from labor, they will cut the mother up right away. I have visited one friend who had given birth to a beautiful baby boy named Biel and the hospital room was very steril and the mother was only allowed to see the baby to feed him. I personally do not think I can handle some strangers taking away my baby. I have mentioned this to my boyfriend who is from here and he thought that was absurd I thought like this. He couldn't understand how I didn't understand that capable nurses and doctors were taking care of the baby and I should not think like this.
In Japan, where I was born, fathers were not even allowed in the labor rooms.

Personal Birthing Experience
To be honest, I do not remember my own birth, have not given birth or have been part of any births, but I'd like to share the experience of my sister's birth. I was not able to be part of that beautiful experience because she lives in Hawaii and I live in Barcelona.
My sister was 23 years old when she gave birth to my nephew Umi. Umi means Ocean in Japanese. The name fits perfectly because my sister was surfing until 8 months into her pregnancy. I think this had a big impact on her labor because she had a very easy labor. My sister, Aleshia, was supposed to give birth on the other side of the island, where her husband is from and was supposed to go there 2 weeks beforehand. One day, she started having "indigestion" as she thought, because she had a fried fish sandwich for dinner. Around 2AM she woke up my brother and my mother because she was pretty sure she was in labor. My mother checked and she was crowning already. As my family is quite healthy, we did not even know where the hospital was in our town, Hilo. As they drove around in a bit of a panic, they found the hospital (Hilo is a very small town). As she went directly into the labor room, my brother stepped out to call her husband to let him know Aleshia was in the hospital. As my brother went back into the room, she had already given birth to Umi! Record time!
I think the fact that she kept a very active lifestyle really helped her have a easy labor.

NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment
To appreciate the vulnerability of children and their dependence on adult.
To truly support children we must respect them. Sometimes we forget that children are vulnerable because they are so happy all the time. As they navigate the world, we should be there for them to catch them when they fall and encourage them when they are afraid and celebrate their successes!

NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment
To respect the dignity and preferences of each family and to make an effort to learn about its structure, culture, language, customs, and beliefs.
I love this Code of Ethic, especially the use of the phrase: respect the dignity. It is so important as a teacher to embrace all children and their families.
